Refugee Runs Liverpool Half Marathon To Support Mentor

On Sunday 13th March, Tewodros Tekeste from Hackney and Vanessa Joubin from Oval will be running the Flora half marathon (13 miles) through Liverpool.

But what makes this an unusual story is that Tewodros and Vanessa met through Time Together, a successful refugee mentoring scheme run by volunteering charity TimeBank. Tewodros is a refugee from Eritrea who came to the UK in 2003.

"We have been training together every Sunday morning on Clapham common", says Vanessa. "I am training for the full marathon and it was Tewodros' idea to help me by training with me, so now instead of me mentoring him he’s supporting me!”

"It's a nice way to spend some lighter time together away from the harder every day things we usually work through, like battling bureaucracy.”

Tewodros said, “I am very excited about seeing Liverpool, even though we will be running! It feels very good for me to be able to help Vanessa as she has been there for me and helped me to find my feet in London.”

Ends.
