“Change politics, not climate”: massive protests took place in Brussels

With the slogans “Change politics, not climate” and “Planet B does not exist”, thousands of activists took to the streets of Brussels on Sunday October 23rd, calling for more ambitious climate policy. This is reported by the Brussels Times.

More than a year after the climate march, which was attended by 50,000 to 70,000 people, the Climate Coalition, a non-profit organization of more than 90 environmental organizations, organized another action demanding more ambitious action to combat climate change on the eve of the Conference United Nations on Climate Change (COP27) to be held in Sharm El Sheikh next month.

“Floods, heatwaves, droughts, forest fires… today climate change is making itself felt all over the world. Including in Belgium, remember at least the catastrophic floods last summer. The conflict in Ukraine amplifies this impact and makes us even more aware of how vulnerable we are. We demand concrete action. Immediately!” the organization said in a statement on its website.

Thousands of climate activists gathered around 13:00 at the Brussels North Station, where they were greeted with musical performances. The march, called Brussels #walkforyourfuture, began at 2:00 pm and ended at about 3:30 pm at the finish point under the Parc du Cinquenter arch.

People were advised not to come to Brussels on Sunday by car. Public transport has also changed.

On Friday, a nationwide demonstration was organized in schools, with the Climate Coalition calling on protesters to “make their own posters with their youth group and use the symbol of the upcoming action.”
